Italian American Organizations in Colorado
Italians first started coming to Colorado as early as the 1850s. They came for many reasons but the majority — particularly later immigrants — came to improve their lives and the lives of their families. During the early part of the 20th century vast numbers of the Italian immigrants were impoverished and toiled at whatever occupation they could find — laborers, farmers, miners, and so on. Accustomed to the networks of fraternal and religious organizations of their homeland, they established new ones such as the Società Bersaglieri Principe di Napoli. These organizations were more than just regional or religious clubs, but were social and economic lifelines for the immigrants. They were places where they could communicate in Italian — particularly in their regional dialect — and where a helping hand would be extended in case of need. With no social security system in place in these early days these organizations also provided modest pension funds to assist their members. The tradition of the Italian American society lives today in Colorado though these societies tend to be more social or, in some cases, religious in nature.
