It brought together some of the most important talents in Italian film culture including future film director Federico Fellini, who contributed to the screenplay; director Roberto Rossellini; and Anna Magnani, an actress who rose to international prominence playing the flawed but soulful Pina, who embarks on a new life with her fiance beneath the looming specter of Nazi forces occupying Rome....Read the full article Mar. 27th, Sun., 2:00 a.m. — Film – The Four Days of Naples (Italian, 1962), Turner Classic Movies (TV) The Four Days of Naples (1962), based on historical events, is unusual as an example of a film in which the protagonist could be said to be the masses, not unlike Soviet films such as Sergei Eisenstein's The Battleship Potemkin (1925); the original Italian credits even omit the usual cast listing. While the film does follow the individual stories of several characters over the course of the film, we do not know in the beginning which of them will live or die, nor what their ultimate significance will be in the events to come. However, the film does in fact include quite a few notable Italian actors, including: Lea Massari, best known for L'Avventura (1960) and Murmur of the Heart (1971); Gian Maria Volonte, who later appeared in A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and Christ Stopped at Eboli (1979); Aldo Giuffre, best known stateside for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966); and the American-born Frank Wolff, who appeared in Salvatore Giuliano (1962) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)....Read the full article Wed Mar 30 2011 - Basilicata Coast to Coast, Rocco Papaleo - Director) Club Italia, Denver University, hosts the Italian Film Festival in Denver with Italian movies in Italian (English subtitles). A penniless maid and a chilly ex-cop, they each go about their daily routines like ghosts, both tormented by mistakes and loss from their individual pasts, unable to truly move forward with their lives in any meaningful way. But, when the two meet for the first time in the grimmest of settings -- a schmaltzy speed dating event -- wary flirtation blooms into desperate passion. Only a single, shocking incident, an ill-timed robbery, threatens to destroy the salvation that Sonia and Guido so quickly find in each other. THE DOUBLE HOUR is, at once, a stark romance, a touching, psychological thriller, and a story about possibilities. La doppia ora: A second chance, a magical moment when a person makes a wish, hoping against hope for a better life, for love, for redemption. But, is wishing, as Guido suggests, only a game? Giuseppe Capotondi’s THE DOUBLE HOUR premiered at the 66th Venice International Film Festival where Ksenia Rappoport’s performance as “Sonia” earned her the Volpi Cup Award for Best Actress and Filippo Timi won the Pasinetti Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of “Guido.” The film also received Venice’s Young Cinema Award for Best Film. THE DOUBLE HOUR, which also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, is Capotondi’s first feature-length motion picture.
